Kester Hoefkens and Hannah Yate present an exciting collaboration of surface design and furniture during London Design Festival 2013
The Project
We are Hannah Yate and Kester Hoefkens - two young, London based designers. During London Design Festival 2013 as ‘Hoefkens & Hannah’ we will exhibit a new collection of work. The exhibition will showcase Hannah’s surface design and Kester’s furniture and lighting design at Studio 1.1 from the 18th – 22nd September 2013 on Redchurch Street, Shoreditch (a short walk from ‘TENT London’). The show is influenced by the natural and man-made landscape of Dungeness on the Kent coastline.
Dungeness is a wild and wonderful place – it is one of the largest pieces of shingle in the world. It has a diverse amount of plant and animal species, as well as a nuclear power station, two lighthouses, a miniature steam railway and a variety of single storey dwellings, many of which were originally train carriages. The area has inspired artists and writers including the late filmmaker Derek Jarman who had a cottage there. The concept for the exhibition has been inspired by a project which Hannah took part in last year with Wrap magazine in conjunction with Field Notes stationary. For this project Hannah made an illustrated book about a visit to Dungeness. It detailed the landscape, the people she encountered, the weather and the man-made structures.
What will we make?
We will work independently and collaboratively to produce work for the exhibition. Your contribution will enable us to pay for the materials and production costs of our work.
Hannah’s new work will utilise motifs based on drawings of the hardy plant and animal life, as well as the wooden boarded houses of the Dungeness peninsula. Inspired by the innovative botanical collages of Mary Delaney, Hannah is interested in the robust sea kales and bright orange lichens of Dungeness. Her new collection will feature upholstery fabric – used to upholster some of Kester’s furniture, interior textile products and wooden wall art-pieces.
Kester will be presenting a complete range of furniture all with a recurring aesthetic, including a sideboard, desk and chair, shelving, day bed and lighting. This is a new direction for him as he is more accustomed to designing bespoke one-off pieces. He was very interested in the different surfaces that he observed at Dungeness – weathered timber, discarded fishing nets, rusty machinery, patinered metals, old boats left to degrade on the shingle and the flotsam and jetsam along the waterline.
Benefits to the local community
Hannah has a diverse experience of working in schools and delivering workshops. With a great passion for sharing our skills we hope to work with local schools during and after the exhibition. We will be offering guided tours of the exhibition to school groups as well as free workshops.
What else will your financial backing help fund?
The exhibition has been scheduled during London Design Week 2013 and will run from the 18th until the 22nd September. By making a contribution through Kickstarter you will assist us in paying for the hire of the gallery space - Studio 1:1 on Redchurch Street in Shoreditch. Your money will help us pay for digital and printed promotional materials. This will include business cards, flyers, posters, postcards.
Rewards
We look forward to thanking each backer with a tangible reward. The details of the individual rewards are detailed in the column to the right. Kickstarter is an all or nothing platform. If we don't raise the goal amount in the given time then we will receive none of the funds pledged. However, any funds over our set target will be used towards making our exhibition even better!
All backers, however small or large your contribution, will be listed in recognition at the entrance to the exhibition (please indicate if you do not wish to be listed). We’d both like to express our thanks to you for taking time to find out about our project. We are both excited about the potential of this opportunity and look forward to sending out any rewards to thank you for your support!

Risks and challengesLearn about accountability on Kickstarter
We both have extensive experience of working on creative projects and commissions that call for tight deadlines. Although there are always some risks with putting on an exhibition, we are positive that through careful planning we will deliver an exciting new collection of high quality work.
